Angul: Timely intervention by social activist Linkan Subudhi prevented a child marriage in Deinriajharan village under Chhendipada police limits in Angul district on Sunday.
Just hours before, the scheduled marriage of a Class-X girl was thwarted by the child rights activist who was in the headlines in 2013 while trying to stop a similar incident in Noida of Uttar Pradesh.
The bride, a student of Similipal Panchayat School, was being married off by her parents against her will to a youth from Baijhan village under the same police limits.
When she learnt about the whole incident, Subudhi with the help of police prevented the illegal wedding and counseled the parents and relatives of the girl. Realising their mistake, the girl’s parents vowed not to get their daughter married before attaining majority.
“She is only 14 years and 10 months old. I want her to continue her studies and would extend all possible support for the same,” said Subudhi. “I managed to convince her mother to educate the girl and she has even given me a written consent to it.”
Notably, 30-year-old Subudhi was battered when she tried to stop a woman from forcibly marrying off her minor daughter in Noida. She had to be admitted in the ICU of a private hospital in Delhi with serious injuries after being attacked with knife and bricks by the prospective groom.
