Breaking stereotypes: Cuttack’s Choudwar Soma Behera carves identity as idol-maker

Breaking barriers in a male-dominated craft, Soma Behera of Cuttack’s Choudwar Housing Board has emerged as a skilled idol-maker. By embracing her family’s traditional profession, she has not only preserved heritage but also created a sustainable livelihood. Her journey is a powerful example of women’s empowerment and resilience.

The rhythmic sounds of clay moulding and chiselling echo through her home as Soma, along with her family, works tirelessly to create idols. Her father once supported the family through idol-making in Cuttack city, and today Soma carries forward that legacy in Choudwar. She began assisting him as a student of Class VII and gradually gave up school to dedicate herself fully to the craft.

From Ganesh Puja to Durga Puja, the peak season leaves her with little rest, as her idols are in high demand at major pandals. Even after the festive season, she keeps busy making smaller idols, decorative items, and assisting her mother with related work.

“The season starts from Bhalukuni Puja. From small idols to bigger ones, I, along with my family members, make them. From Ganesh Puja to Durga Puja, we work throughout these months,” said Soma.

“She always wanted to help her father in idol making. All my daughters are very capable in idol making,” said Minati Behera, Soma’s mother.

Soma, who is unmarried, says idol-making is their ancestral profession, passed down through generations. Her six sisters also know the craft to varying degrees, though most are now married. Her father proudly says that his daughters are like sons working alongside me.

“We are an artisan family. All my daughters help me in the idol making,” said Abhimanyu Behera, Soma’s father.

With determination and dedication, Soma has transformed into a renowned artisan, inspiring other women to pursue their passions fearlessly. Today, she stands not just as a skilled idol-maker but also as a symbol of empowerment and resilience.
