Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high in the capital city here on Sunday afternoon when some irate students of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) went into a rampage and hurled tomatoes and eggs at the vice chancellor (VC) inside a hotel where the university’s Alumni Meet was underway.

Though the police later rushed to the hotel and managed to rescue the VC Shyam Sundar Patnaik, palpable, tension still prevails in the hotel till reports last came in.

“We have deposited around Rs 48 lakh but in return we neither got the job and nor got back the money we had deposited. They even did not give certificates of 2012 batch. We want a new VC who can streamline the BPUT,” said an angry student.

He also threatened that they will intensify their protest if their demands go unfulfilled.
Echoing the same voice, another student said the VC should be answerable to issues like question paper leak, delay in giving certificates and making hundred marks without notice.

“Why the university authorities are playing with our careers?” the angry student asked.

It is reported that the students are enraged over the inordinate delay in the publications of results, issuance of certificates and mark sheets.

Speaking on the incident, BPUT VC Shyam Sundar Pattnaik said, “The meet was organized to show the strength of BPUT and involvement of our students in different activities. But unfortunately, due to misunderstanding it turned out to be an ugly one”.

He also said the students demand many things to change overnight which is absolutely not possible.

“We are taking steps to meet their demand one by one,” he pointed out.
The BPUT Alumni Meet began at around 3.30 pm. However, trouble started after the arrival of the VC at the venue at around 4 pm.

Meanwhile, the irate students have staged a road blockade near Master Canteen Square here demanding fulfillment of their demands.
