Infant death toll in Cuttack rises to 21

Cuttack: With four more deaths of infants, allegedly due to negligence in treatment at Sishu Bhawan here, the death toll has gone up to 20.

Sources said four infants died this morning who were admitted to the hospital few days back.

Sources added, the infants were referred from hospitals in Banki, Paradip, Nayagarh and Anandpur areas.

Though allegations of negligence have been rejected by the hospital authorities, an internal inquiry team has been set up to probe the matter. Hospital sources said Cuttack collector will submit a report to the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) on the issue this evening.

At least 15 newborns died till yesterday while undergoing treatment in the ICU and a paediatric died in the ward of the hospital triggering a protest by the attendants and relatives of the patients, who allege negligence in treatment as the cause of the deaths.

Sources in the hospital said at least 21 newborns in the ICU and 300 other paediatrics were undergoing treatment and at least 40 of them, including the newborns in the ICU, were in critical condition.
