Cuttack: The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of the millennium city on Friday said police have registered a murder case and investigation is on into fire at a house in Sector-7 Markatnagar area here on Thursday, in which four persons were killed on the spot and two more at the SCB hospital later.

Talking to OTV, DCP Sanjeev Arora said, "On the basis of the dying statement of Anita Sahoo and a detailed report of Arun Sahoo, a murder case under Section 302 of IPC has been registered."

"In her dying statement before the Magistrate, Anita said her father, Anadi torched the room after pouring kerosene," he said.

Family dispute could be the reason behind the incident as Anadi's children were unhappy about the second marriage of their father. Anadi's first wife had died long back, Arora added.

Verification of a suicide note recovered from the room had confirmed that it had been written by Anadi Sahoo, said Arora.

Anita Sahoo and Anadi Sahoo, both of whom had sustained serious injuries in the fire, succumbed to their injuries today while being treated at burn ward of the SCB hospital.

Anita was the sister of Arun Sahoo, who had taken the house on rent, and daughter of Anadi.

Notably, four of a family, including three children, were charred to death due to the fire in the room on Thursday evening while the injured father-daughter duo was admitted to the SCB hospital in a critical condition. Kuni Sahoo, aged 40, was burnt alive with her three children in the fire. Kuni, a cousin sister of Arun, had come to Cuttack with her children for Bali Yatra.

Sources said the incident happened at around 7.30 pm. There were no signs that the fire in the house could have been caused by a gas cylinder blast or an electrical short circuit. they said.
