Bhubaneswar: The sudden removal of BK Sharma from the post of Director General of Police (DGP) has sparked a row with Opposition BJP and Congress slamming the move of the Odisha government.

Sharma was replaced by 1986 batch IPS officer Abhay in a dramatic reshuffle effected last night just hours after a high level panel was constituted to probe allegations of irregularities against the former.

Taking a dig at the State government, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati alleged that the government is using DGP as toy and removing officials and appointing them arbitrarily.

He questioned whether the Odisha government was not aware of the allegations against BK Sharma. “If the government had no idea about the allegations then it is their mistake. Such arbitrary decision to dismiss DGP has become a habit of government as it thinks DGPs are like dolls and it can kick out and even welcome anyone at whim,” Bahinipati said.

Speaking on the ouster of BK Sharma from DGP post, BJP MLA Jayanarayan Mishra also slammed the Odisha government. "Such things are frequent in the State. The government does not have full faith on any officials. Those who do not work according to the wish of the government are ousted," Mishra said.

Expressing his view on this issue, Senior journalist Sandeep Sahu said, “The circumstances in which a top cop has been removed from his post in the middle of the night has definitely raised eyebrows. The reason cited in the notification issued by the government over the replacement of the DGP is not enough and unjustifiable.”

“According to the notification of the Home department, many applications for fire safety certificates were pending for a long time for which various industrial establishments, hospitals and educational institutes were affected. But removing a top official for this reason is not acceptable. There must be some other reason behind such move,” Sahu added.
