Koraput: Locals at Borigumma block in the district have demanded the shifting of the proposed railway track between Jeypore and Nabrangpur by 5 kilomtres stating that it would increase congestion if it passes through the town as per the present plan.

Several locals took out a march to the Collector’s office earlier on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum to this effect.

In the memorandum they have detailed the hassles people will face if the plan is executed on the ground.

Subash Chandra Nayak, a local resident who was part of the march, said “As per the present plan of the Railways, the track will pass through the busiest parts of Borigumma where schools, a college, markets and a hospital exist. The movement of trains will make the place busier and prone to accidents.”

Nayak said though they had voiced their concerns on multiple occasions in the past the government appears to move ahead with the plan. “The proposed railway track in the town will put human lives to imminent hazards. If the government wants to go ahead with the project, it should shift the location of the tracks to five kilometres away from the town so that it won’t put people to inconveniences,” he said while warning of agitations if the government did not consider their demands.

Meanwhile, the district sub-collector said that the final decision on the rail project would be taken only after garnering a consensus through consultation with the Pallisabha and Gramasabha.

It may be noted that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 784 crore for the Jeypore-Nabarangapur broad gaze railway project in 2016. And as per the MOU signed between the State government and the Central government, the State has to give the land free of cost and share 50 per cent of the project cost.
