Cuttack: In a gruesome incident, a woman and child were allegedly burnt to death in the temple premises at Khalarda near Pratap Nagari here.
The deceased identified as Sandhyarani Jena along with her two-year-old son Abhijit died of severe burn injuries in the premises of Khaleswar Shiva temple late on Thursday night. A tin of kerosene and a match box were found alongside the bodies. Though the exact reason of the mishap is still unclear, it is suspected that Sandhyarani might have committed suicide by pouring kerosene on herself and her son or element of foul play cannot be ruled out.
On Thursday night, an auto rickshaw driver while passing through the temple saw the incident happening at around 2 am following which he raised an alarm to rescue the mother-son duo. Though people rushed to the spot to bail them out, all their efforts went in vain.
As per reports, Sandhyarani, daughter of Gaurang Jena hailed from Sailo Jharpara village under Govindpur police limits. Three years back, she was married to Subodh Jena of neighbouring Sinhal village.
Meanwhile, Sandhyarani`s family members allege that their daughter and grandson have been killed.
On receipt of complaint, Cuttack Sadar police reached the spot and began investigating into the matter.
