Malkangiri: A group of at least 30 Maoists gunned down three villagers in Kopara, Udaygiri and Mahupadar area under Mathili police station of Malkangiri district last night.

The rebels left behind hand-written letters claming that the trio were killed for opposing the Maoist organisation. The identity of the deceased is yet to ascertained.

A temporary BSF camp has been set up near the village and combing operation has been intensified in the area after the incident. The jawans have kept a close watch on the ultras' movement as the area borders of Chhatisgarh.

In a related development, a woman cadre belonging to Srikakulam-Koraput division of CPI (Maoist), who was carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh, was arrested during combing operation by BSF jawans in Narayanpatna of Koraput district. The woman rebel identified as Tulasi Mandangi of Dekapatu village was a close aide of Maoist leader Aruna, Daya and Nirmala, BSF-28 Batalion sources said.
