Jajpur: Many of us have hundreds of friends online but one true friend in real life can certainly make a huge difference. Dhananjay Swain of Sapanpur village in Jajpur district is the only ray of hope for his friend Nursingha Charan Rout who has been battling for life after being diagnosed with kidney related ailments.

It is now almost a decade (nine years) that Dhananjay has been tirelessly looking after his ailing friend in his tough times.

“Initially, my legs started to swell and it was my friend Dhananjay who took me to hospital where it was diagnosed that my kidneys have got damaged,” said Nrusingha Charan Rout of Champapur village.

Dhananjay and Nrusingha are childhood friends and their friendship has become the talk of the town. After his friend was diagnosed with renal failure, Dhananjay has been shouldering the responsibility to take Nrusingha to a private hospital in Cuttack for dialysis twice a week.

“It has already been nine years that I have been taking my friend to hospital for dialysis,” said Dhananjay.

All the expenses, right from medicines to treatment of Nrusingha, are being borne by Dhananjay. Besides, he has been looking after all the family requirements of Nrusingha and even bearing the expenses of his daughter’s education.

According to reports, there has been a delay in Nrusingha’s renal transplant due to problems in getting a matching kidney.

“We are facing problems as my husband is sick and our family is indebted towards Dhananjay who stood by us in such crucial time,” said Jyotsnarani Rout, Nrusingha’s wife.

Though Dhananjay’s fight to save his friend is certainly commendable, locals are demanding assistance from the State government which can give a new lease of life for his loving friend Nrusingha.

“So far, Nrusingha has not received any assistance from the government. It is Dhananjay who has shouldered all the responsibility of his treatment,” said Madhusudan Rout, a local resident.
