Keonjhar: In yet another incident of jumbo tragedy, an elephant was mowed down by a goods train while the animal was crossing the railway track near Nilakantheswar station under Ghatagaon range here on Thursday.

A herd of elephants were crossing the tracks while a Bhubaneswar bound goods train coming from Joda hit a female elephant which stood on the track. The animal died on the spot. Train communication was completely disrupted as the carcass laid on the track for quite sometimes. Keonjhar SCF and other forest department officials reached the spot.

Notably, six elephants were mowed down by a superfast passenger train near Subalaya in Ganjam district in December, 2012.
