Cuttack: After a brief lull, the ghost of gastroenteritis is back to haunt people of Baselihata in Narasinghpur as more than 250 people have been affected with diarrhoea here.

The affected people have been admitted to hospitals at Kanpur, Narsinghpur and Badama. The diseased people mostly include children and women.

“The patients are on medicines. The doctors and the attendants are attending the patients in the camp,” Medical Officer of Ayush Baikunth Bihari Mohanty said.

People complain that the water source could have been contaminated due to breach of water pipes.

The three borewell points that are the main source of water linkage would have been contaminated as an unused and non potable water source is adjacent to these points.

“The pipes have been contaminated after coming in contact with the non potable water pool nearby and hundreds of people have fallen ill after consuming it,” a local resident said.

“The water is not potable at all,” another local resident added.

However, the engineer has refuted the allegations and has said that sample of the water has been sent for laboratory test and the repair work of the damaged pipe is under progress.

“We have sent sample of water for laboratory test,” Junior Engineer of Rural water supply department Anant Narayan Bhol said.
