Bhubaneswar: A week after he killed his pregnant teenage daughter for marrying outside the caste, Kailash Tanla, who was on the run since the incident, was arrested from Badmal area in the district on Friday.
“Yesterday, we got information about Tanla’s presence in Badmal. A GRP team arrested him from near Badmal railway station,” said an police officer. Kailash has confessed to the crime during interrogation, he said.
Meanwhile, taking suo motu cognizance of the honour killing incident, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Friday asked the district collector to submit a report on the case within two weeks.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district and Executive Officer of Bolangir municipality have been made party in the Commission’s order.
The incident made media headlines a week ago after the body of the girl, Gita Tanla, who was murdered by her father for marrying outside the caste, was thrown into a dumpyard by the municipality officials as her relatives did not turn up to perform the last rites fearing social boycott.
Even though the government has implemented the ‘Harischandra Yojana’ to provide for funeral of unclaimed bodies, neither the civic body nor the district administration made any attempt to ensure the last rites are performed for the victim. The municipality, which threw the body after post-mortem, simply passed the buck to the district administration.
