Kendrapara: The Bhitarkanika National Park will remain closed for the visitors from May 1 to July 31. The two months ban on the entry of tourists and visitors to the national park, which is home to about 1,600 saltwater crocodiles, was imposed as the crocodile nesting season is underway, Rajkanika DFO said.
Crocodiles tend to become violent during the nesting and breeding. Keeping it in view, the decision has been taken, park officials said. People residing in the lower catchment area of the park have also been alerted, they added.
Crocodiles mate between February and April and nesting takes place in May. Hatchlings emerge from the eggs after 70-80 days. The mother crocodile actively guards the nest, usually prepared with mangrove twigs, leaves and mud.
