Bhubaneswar: As many as 23 migratory birds carcass were seized by Tangi wildlife department officials and one arrested on Sunday in connect with this.

Sources said the deceased birds were of Purple Moren and Brown Crake species. The arrested person, Arun Kalesi, had killed the birds from Chilika Lake with the help of other poachers through traps and a shot gun.

Meanwhile, they added the Tangi wildlife department has so far arrested 18 poachers within the last two months on charges of killing migratory birds.

Notably, this year the Chilika wildlife department has set up 17 base camps and deployed more than 70 employees to stop poaching of birds.

Despite deployment of the staff to prevent killing, it is difficult to keep an eye on poachers in Chilika Lake which spreads around 11,000 sq km perimeter, said a senior wildlife official on condition of anonymity.
