Repeated incidents of floating bridge vessel (Bhasa Pola) getting stuck in the middle of Chilika lake has emerged as a matter of serious concern.
The boat had set off from the Gada jetty under Krushnaprasad block in Puri district with 20 devotees who were going to Goddess Kalijai shrine to have darshan on the occasion of Makar Sankranti today.
As per the census that was conducted on Wednesday, the lake saw arrival of total of 11,31,929 birds this year of which 10.93 lakh are migratory birds.
The head counting exercise is underway at five ranges under Chilika Wildlife Division – Balugaon, Tangi, Nuapada, Rambha and Satapada.
Sources said, the milk obtained from a specific type of buffalo, close to the region surrounding the brackish water lagoon is believed to have some unique properties and can treat cancer.
The carnivorous predators were also spotted near the bird's island in the southern sector of Chilika lake. This species has also been camera trapped during fishing cat estimation, it said.
More than 50 passengers are feared trapped in the middle of the Chilika lake after a floating bridge vessel (Bhasa Pola) ferrying them got stranded midway on Thursday.
