In February last year, 100 passengers got stranded in the middle of Chilika near Satapada while travelling in a floating bridge vessel. Reports claimed the vessel was on way from Satapada to Janhikuda when it developed a technical glitch.
Similarly, the dolphin census is also underway in Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapara district. The annual exercise is being conducted by 9 teams.
At least 21 teams comprising 5-6 ornithologists in each have been deployed in the counting of the migratory and domestic birds in Chilika lagoon spreading over Rambha, Balugaon, Tangi, Satapada and Chilika ranges.
As per reports, the boat en route to Janhikuda from Satapada in Puri developed technical snag and was rendered immobile in the lake.

Sources said, the milk obtained from a specific type of buffalo, close to the region surrounding the brackish water lagoon is believed to have some unique properties and can treat cancer.
The carnivorous predators were also spotted near the bird's island in the southern sector of Chilika lake. This species has also been camera trapped during fishing cat estimation, it said.
