Bolangir: Two persons were today arrested on charges of their involvement in a cybercrime under which more than Rs 1 lakh was withdrawn in fake names through nrega.nic.in, the official website of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

Informing this to mediapersons here, additional superintendent of police B. Jugal Kishore also said that a laptop and other equipment were seized from the possession of the arrested persons Dharmendra Thakur and Sujit Agarwal.

While Thakur was working as a contractual computer programmer at Belpada block office, he opened 31 bank accounts in the name of fictitious persons. However, police found Thakur’s biometric thumb impression in the documents of those accounts. Thakur had managed to secure digital signature certificate (DSC) in the name of one Jagabandhu Sahu illegally.

Agarwal, who is a bank employee, helped mastermind Thakur in committing the crime.

Notably, complaints were lodged by Forest and Horticulture departments with Town police alleging withdrawal of Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh deceitfully on different occasions. Even an allegation was made that Rs 90,000 was transferred from the account of Belpada BDO’s government account in the same manner.

A team of three Thematic and IT experts was formed by the State government to dig into the complaints and it found the allegations true.
