Woman commits suicide in Cuttack
Two of her daughters tried to rescue her and also sustained burn injuries. While one of them is hospitalised with 70 percent burns, the other escaped with minor injuries.
Urmila Behera (55) set her afire on the roof of their Pareswar Sahi resident in the morning after dousing herself in kerosene. Hearing her cries, her daughters- Ranjita (28) and Rashmita (25) — rushed to the roof. Seeing their mother in flames, both tried to save her but failed.
"In the event, Ranjita has received over 70 percent burn injuries while her sister had sustained minor bruises on her hands," police said adding Urmila died on the spot.
Locals believe that the woman, whose husband had predeceased her, was suffering from certain disease and was always in pain. "Perhaps unable to bear the acute pain, she had taken the extreme step," said a neighbour.
