In this fast paced life, there might be occasions when you might fail to keep a track on what's happening around you or what's making news. Any viral message is enough to take your peace away the moment to try to turn on mobile or go through several social media posts.

One such viral message recently on deduction of Rs 173 if you do more than four ATM transactions has created panic among several people. This viral message forced many to go through several articles to check the authenticity of such message.

The viral post claimed that a person will be charged Rs 173 if they withdraw money beyond four times from ATMs. Apart from this, it was also claimed that after 4 transactions from June 1, every transaction will be charged Rs 150.

A fact-check by PIB found such message to be ‘fake.’ As per the fact-check and existing rules, a customer will not be charged anything as he/she is allowed to do free five transactions every month from their own bank ATMs.

As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), customers are also eligible for free transactions (inclusive of financial and non-financial transactions) from other bank ATMs viz. three transactions in metro centres and five transactions in non-metro centres.

“To compensate the banks for the higher interchange fee and given the general escalation in costs, they are allowed to increase the customer charges to Rs 21 per transaction. This increase shall be effective from January 1, 2022,” read RBI notification.
