In an unusual turn of events, a groom was beaten up by the family members of his bride after he kissed her during the varmala ritual. The groom and his family members sustained injuries in the brawl due to the kissing, reports said.

While the bride’s family accused the groom of kissing her aggressively, the man, on the other hand, stated that the bride received a normal kiss at the varmala ritual.

The incident led to family members deciding to call off the wedding. However, the couple rejected the decision and went ahead with the marriage. Later, the marriage was conducted after the intervention of the elderly persons.

“In the dead of night, we received a call at around 1:30 am. Five ended up in the hospital with injuries before being released. However, no official complaints were filed with the police station,” Hapur ASP Rajkumar Agrawal told TOI.

According to sources, two sisters were getting married at the same time in Hapur’s Ashok Nagar area. While the elder sister’s marriage went on pleasantly, a quarrel arose when the young sister’s groom kissed her on the mandap.

Enraged, the bride’s family began striking the groom and his family with sticks. The bride’s relatives, triggered by the kiss, stormed onto the stage and assaulted the groom and his family, TOI reported.
