With middle order batsman Shreyas Iyer’s fitness in doubt, there is an uncertainty over the No.4 slot for Team India for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 to be played in India.

Though India captain Rohit Sharma stated that Iyer is on track to attain his full fitness, lack of clarity on his recovery has impacted the team’s combination recently.

India tried 360 degree batsman Suryakumar Yadav and wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson for the position during the West Indies tour. But, both of them failed to impress the selectors with their batting in the crucial position.

However, veteran India opener Shikhar Dhawan feels that SKY (as Suryakumar is popularly known) will be the best choice for the coveted No.4 spot in case Iyer doesn’t get fit into the squad.

“I would go with SKY at four as he is an experienced player and has been playing international cricket for a while,” said Dhawan during an interview.

“We have got a very good side which has the right blend of experience and youth. We will have the home advantage. We know the grounds and pitches well and that is going to come in very handy during the upcoming World Cup,” he added.
