Gujarat Titans suffered a major setback early in their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign. Star batsman Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the entire season after picking up a knee injury during their campaign opener against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad on Friday.

As per reports, Williamson will not feature in any IPL matches of this season anymore. The New Zealand skipper hurt his right knee while attempting to take a catch and save a six during the match. He almost caught the ball, but it popped out of his hand as he had a bad landing. Once he was down, he could not get up anymore. The medical team was there to assist him. After a delay of a few minutes, he was taken off the field.

Williamson’s absence will hurt Gujarat Titans as he was a key player for the defending champions.

“It’s a pretty bad news for us. We have to find out his injury status soon,” said Gujarat Titans’ coach Gary Kirsten on Williamson’s injury.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans started their title defense with a five wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings. Rashid Khan was adjudged man of the match for his all-round effort.
