Miscreants allegedly snatched ballot boxes from booth number-9 in Kashijharia village of Chapamanik Gram Panchayat under Brahmagiri block in Puri during the first phase of the three-tier Panchayat polls on Wednesday disrupting polling at the booth.

As per police sources, polling was going on smoothly at the booth till 10.30 am. However, a youth entered the booth on the pretext of casting his vote. He abruptly snatched away a ballot box and ran away from the place. Later he threw the ballot box to the other side of the wall. Other miscreants were waiting there and altogether they took the ballot box and ran away to a nearby forest.

The identification of the miscreants and the reason behind the loot are yet to be ascertained. Brahmagiri police have launched an investigation into the incident.

“Earlier at 7 am few youth of the village had come to the booth to tell me that two villagers should be allowed to be present during the polling as per the decision of the villagers. However, I didn’t entertain their proposal. The polling was going on smoothly till 10.30 am when the untoward incident happened,” said Presiding officer Kamrool Hussain Khan.

“I immediately informed the local police and they have started an investigation into the incident. I have also discussed the matter with the local people and according to them some villagers are involved in the snatching,” said Khan.
