Woman 'attacked by in-laws for dowry' in Odisha

A newly-wed woman was allegedly tortured for dowry following which she was reportedly injured. The victim reportedly suffered a broken arm in the attack by her parents-in-law and her husband’s sister. The incident was reported from Podadiha under Soro Police limits of Balasore district on Thursday. 

The injured woman was admitted to the Soro community health centre.  

As per reports, Meghna Pradhan was married to Trailokya Jena of Podadiha about seven months ago.

Meghna alleged that after the marriage, her in-laws used to torture her, to bring a dowry – Rs 10 lakh and a vehicle.  She was at her parents' house. On Wednesday, she came back home. Her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and sister-in-law allegedly attacked her with a crowbar. During the attack, her right hand broke.

“When my mother-in-law, father-in-law, and their daughter attacked me with a crowbar, I covered my head with my hands. My right hand was broken. They are always forcing me to go for divorce. They are demanding a dowry of Rs 10 lakh and a bike,” she lamented. 

However, her father-in-law, Subash Jena dismissed the allegation as fictitious and baseless. Showing a medical prescription of the woman, Subansh Jena said, “She is a mentally ill patient and is under medication. Allegations of dowry and attack are completely false.”
