New Delhi: BJP on Tuesday expressed concern over the agitation in Jaitapur and maintained that since the nuclear issue has several aspects there was a need for a debate on it.

"Post-Fukushima, the nuclear issue is a matter of great concern. Moreover, the Jaitapur issue is also related to the environment," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

He was referring to the damage to Fukushima nuclear reactor in Japan after the recent Tsunami and earthquake there. The incident had imperiled the lives of several locals who had to be evacuated from the area.

The agitation in Jaitapur in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra continued today. One person had died in police firing yesterday. The locals are opposed to the nuclear plant in that region as it is highly earthquake-prone.

"Ratnagiri is still tense. This is definitely a matter of concern. There is a need for a debate on this issue," Rudy said.

BJP`s ally Shiv Sena is leading the agitation at Jaitapur. However, BJP activists have not yet joined the movement.
