A havildar under Odisha Police on Monday allegedly tried to kill himself in Bhadrak following a quarrel with his neighbour who also happens to be a policeman. The cop, who narrowly escaped death following the suicide bid, has been identified as Baikuntha Das.

As per reports, Das had developed some difference of opinion with his neighbour and was allegedly insulted for it during duty hours. Das' family members alleged that he couldn’t bear with the insult and tried to end his life by consuming some pesticide.

The havildar was immediately admitted to Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital by his family members in a critical condition. Later he was shifted to a private hospital in Cuttack for intensive care due to falling health.

Prior to the incident, Das and his neighbour had filed two separate complaints against each other at Bhadrak Town police station.

“My father tried to kill himself by consuming pesticide as he was insulted and mentally tortured by some of his colleagues at the police station,” said Das’ daughter Rajeswari Das.

“They have been nursing a grudge on my father for some reason. My father was told to leave the allotted residential police quarters within 24 hours. He came under tremendous pressure and tried to kill himself as he was not able to come to terms with such humiliation and harassment. We demand strong action against the culprits who tortured my father mentally,” said Rajeswari.

No comments have so far been obtained from Bhadrak Town Police and Das’ neighbour.
