Throwing chicken biryani feast for people on the recent partial solar eclipse day has landed some so called rationalists in legal trouble as some nationalist and religious outfits have lodged FIR against them.

The Nikhila Utkal Prabakta Parishad has filed an FIR against ‘rationalists’, Debendra Sutar and Pratap Rath in Markatnagar Police Station at CDA sector – 6, Cuttack. The council was supported by Jai Jagannath Charan Samiti in the FIR as well.

As per the FIR, Sutar and Rath have hurt religious sentiments of Hindus and stoked societal disharmony by instigating others to eat food during solar eclipse.

Slamming the rationalists, President of the Mutt Temple Servitor Committee, Kameswar Tripathy said, “Abstinence from food during an eclipse is our religious belief. If we do not respect our culture and tradition, a day will come when people will question the existence of God. Is this the way we are heading.”

However, Debendra Sutar refuted the allegations and said he has been receiving death threats from unknown miscreants for which a counter FIR has been lodged at the Markatnagar police station as well.

“Somebody called me over phone and threatened to kill me alleging I have hurt their religious sentiments. I have lodged an FIR in this connection too,” said Sutar.

Meanwhile, Orissa High Court advocate Sandipan Mishra served a legal notice to rationalist Pratap K Rath who is Psychology Professor at Utkal University and sought reply from him as to why legal proceedings should not be initiated against him.
