  • Serotonin levels play an important role in managing your mood swings.
  • Certain foods and lifestyle changes can help you increase levels of this happy chemical.

Life is full of fluctuations and highs and lows. Even though a normal office-going person has his day fully chalked out, every now and then one has to face some sort of stress and pressure that indirectly or directly affects him mentally as well as physically. And due to all this, we have mood fluctuations which are basically affected by Serotonin.

What is Serotonin?

It is a hormone that is involved in multiple processes that take place inside a body. Serotonin regulates mood, and sleep cycles and also boosts activities that make you feel happy. Hence, it is also popularly called a happy chemical. That is why your body requires a good supply of Serotonin and you can obtain it through a good workout, sunlight, and many other things. Here’s a list:

A diet rich in Tryptophan can do wonders

Studies prove that it is not possible to get this happy chemical directly through food. But if you eat protein-rich foods that are packed with tryptophan, a type of amino acid then it gets easily converted into Serotonin. Tryptophan is largely found in foods like nuts, salmon, cheese, and eggs.

Boost Serotonin with good exercise

You feel happy and relaxed after a good session of exercise. It is because exercise boosts the level of tryptophan in the blood. From brisk walking, and jogging to yoga and high-intensity workouts, all these exercises boost Serotonin in your body.

Get your daily dose of Sunlight

Sunlight not only gives vitamin D but also improves Serotonin levels in your body. You must spend at least 10 to 15 minutes in the sun to get your daily dose of this happy chemical.

Try massage therapy

Cortisol is the stress hormone that increases when you are under tension. Massage therapy decreases this stress hormone and increases the Serotonin levels in the body making you feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

Spend time with loved ones

Socializing and spending time with loved ones also lifts up your mood and is good for your overall wellness. If you do not have time to go out, having a pet at home and playing with it during your free time also does wonders to increase your Serotonin levels.
