It is not unusual for nails to become yellow as a symptom of more serious disorders such as chronic lung disease, internal cancers, lymphatic blockages, and even rheumatoid arthritis.

Another common complaint is nail brittleness, which is the condition of weak, inelastic nails that break, flake, and crumble. Often, it's idiopathic. Many dermatological and systemic diseases, nutritional deficiencies, drugs, and trauma can also cause it. It can also result from factors altering nail plate production and/or damage to already keratinised nail plates.

Here are the most important vitamins and nutrients that you can include in your daily diet to have healthy and beautiful nails.

Protein

A fibrous structural protein known as keratin is primarily responsible for the strength and resilience of nails. Interestingly, the keratin you see is dead. To build strong nails, your body sheds dead cells as new cells emerge from underneath. Consuming enough protein in your diet is crucial to boosting keratin production, whereas low protein intake will lead to weak nails.

Biotin

Vitamin B7, also known as biotin, is an essential compound for constructing new nails and supporting healthy cell growth. You may find that foods and supplements rich in biotin strengthen your fingernails. The liver contains the highest concentration of biotin, but you can also find it in egg yolks, dairy products, yeast, salmon, avocados, sweet potatoes, nuts, seeds, and even cauliflower.

Vitamin C

A vitamin C-rich diet is essential for collagen production. Collagen is a building block of fingernails, hair, and teeth. The body cannot produce Vitamin C, so if you are deficient, your nails will become brittle and you will not be able to grow them. Citrus fruits, such as oranges, strawberries, and kiwi are thought to be the best sources of vitamin C, but bell peppers, green vegetables, and tomatoes are also abundant in this vitamin.

Nevertheless, deficiencies in certain vitamins, minerals, and nutrients may adversely affect your nails. Your nails are likely to grow better if you get your vitamins and nutrients through food, but when you can’t, a supplement may help meet your needs. It is always advisable to consult a medical expert before starting any additional supplements.
