  • There are two types of vitamins viz. fat soluble and water soluble vitamins.
  • These two should never be taken together.

Vitamins and supplements are often prescribed when a person is deficient. And it is also very normal for everyone to take all these supplements and vitamin tablets or syrups together. If you are taking them according to prescription by a healthcare expert then he will make sure that the combinations of the medications are right.

But many times, people have a habit of popping a vitamin C or vitamin D tablet in their mouth while they are already taking other supplements. And when they start facing problems like allergies, mouth ulcers, constipation and even some serious health issues, they wonder what has suddenly made this change in their health. It is because the combination of certain vitamins and supplements do not make a good pair and these should not be taken together.

Fat soluble and water soluble vitamins

There are two types of vitamins viz. fat soluble and water soluble vitamins that are recommended. The one example of fat soluble vitamin is Vitamin D tablets that is absorbed best when eaten with your meal as it is soluble in fat. While other nutrients like vitamin B12 and C are water soluble and hence should be ideally taken empty stomach.

Thus, taking both these types of vitamins at the same time can reduce their absorption and effectiveness.

Iron and calcium supplements

These two supplements should not be eaten together. When taken with iron supplements, calcium supplements can reduce the absorption of iron. To ensure that you get maximum benefit of both these supplements ideally they must be taken two hours apart. The best way is to take one supplement in the morning and another one in the evening.

Magnesium and calcium

Both calcium and magnesium are highly essential for the health of bones and functioning of muscles. But when taken together they interfere with each other’s absorption and hence should be taken at least two hours apart. Rather it is advisable to take these medications at different time of the day like one supplement in the afternoon and another one in the evening so that the supplements are absorbed properly.

Copper and Zinc

Both Zinc and Copper are micronutrients which when taken at the same time compete to get more absorbed in the body. That is why these should not be taken together.

Vitamin C and Vitamin B12

Both vitamin B12 and vitamin C play an active role in the bodily functions. But you should never take them together as a high dose of vitamin C hinders metabolism and absorption of vitamin B12.
