World Kidney Day is an initiative that is celebrated on March 9 jointly by the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF) and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). It is a global campaign that throughout the year tries to create awareness about kidney, its importance, prevention of diseases related to the kidney, and treatments that are currently available.

On World Kidney Day today know how you can maintain ideal creatinine and uric acid levels in the body.

Significance of creatinine in maintaining kidney health

Creatinine is transported to the kidneys by the blood where they are thrown out of the body through urine. But if your kidneys are not working properly, it can lead to high levels of creatinine in the blood. Abnormal levels of uric acid or creatinine indicate damage to kidneys or kidney disease.

Things to do to maintain creatinine and uric levels

Avoid creatinine supplements

Creatinine is naturally made in the liver. It is then transported to the muscles and used as energy. The metabolic byproduct that is produced after the energy is used is creatinine. While some athletes use creatinine supplements to improve their performance at the competitive level, those who have a normal working lifestyle should avoid such supplements.

Cut down protein intake

Eating protein in large amounts leads to a rise in creatinine levels. Cooked red meat in particular causes an immediate rise in the levels of uric acid and creatinine. That is why if you are eating lots of red meat plus dairy products then you must switch to vegetable-based dishes and try to procure protein from healthy options like hearty vegetable stew or lentil soup.

Add more fiber to your diet

A study has shown that those who added more roughage to their diet showed a significant decline in their creatinine and uric acid levels. Fiber can be obtained from whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes.

Cut down your salt intake

Foods that have salt in excess lead to high blood pressure and also increase creatinine levels. More often highly processed foods are packed with loads of sodium which can increase renal issues. Instead, you must focus on eating unprocessed, and whole food items and flavour them with natural herbs and spices.

Say no to smoking and alcohol

Smoking can lead to several health issues including a rise in the levels of creatinine. While the consumption of alcohol by a healthy person in moderate amounts is good for the kidneys, for those who are struggling with renal issues alcohol consumption can be fatal. More importantly, the consumption of alcohol in excess in any case is not advisable.
