Richa Chadha, renowned for her method acting, delved deep into her craft for her portrayal of Lajjo in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's debut Netflix series, ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’.

In an interview with Zoom, she unveiled her unconventional approach, admitting to being a teetotaller but resorting to a small dose of ‘gin’ to embody the essence of a tough, intoxicated Kathak dance scene.

Struggling initially to capture the essence of the scene, Richa experimented with alcohol, taking a sip after numerous unsuccessful takes. However, she discovered that the slight inebriation hindered rather than aided her performance.

“I was better off pretending to be drunk than actually getting a little tipsy. It is a technical job, no matter how much I dance, my dress is so heavy, I have to hit that mark, interact. It was fun for me to do,” she revealed.

Opting for precision over lethargy, she abandoned the idea of real intoxication, realizing that authenticity could be achieved through portrayal rather than experience.

Reportedly, she took 99 takes to shoot the dance sequence, revealed Richa on Saturday's edition of The Great Indian Kapil Show, where she appeared as a guest alongside her Heeramandi co-stars

“I almost hit a century. You know, it's not easy. People think it's easy. Imagine that you're dancing with about 200 to 300 extras watching you, and you're unable to perform well. But when you overcome that, you feel like, ‘Wow, I didn’t know I could do this," said Richa.

Supporting her every step of the way, Richa's husband, actor Ali Fazal, expressed admiration for her performance in an Instagram post.

Celebrating her success in ‘Heeramandi’, he praised her exceptional talent and their partnership both on and off-screen. Richa reciprocated the sentiment, expressing gratitude for their shared journey.
