The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued an advisory regarding compliance with fire safety norms. Vice-chancellors of Technical Education and Principals of AICTE-approved institutions have been instructed to ensure strict enforcement of the existing regulations.

In a letter, the AICTE Member Secretary has stated that non-compliance with fire safety norms and standards shall be the responsibility and risk of the respective institution.

Key Points In The Advisory

A valid Fire Safety Certificate shall be obtained from the competent authority by all Technical Institutions.  Accordingly, all the AICTE approved institutions shall be in possession of Fire Safety Certificate as per extant regulations. The certificate shall be renewed periodically as per the norms. 

Institution may conduct regular comprehensive fire safety audits to identify potential fire hazards and non-compliances within the institution's premises.

Institution shall ensure the installation and proper functioning of firefighting equipment, such as fire extinguishers, hose reels, and automatic fire detection and alarm systems.

Institution shall regularly inspect and maintain the institution's electrical systems, wiring, and equipment to prevent fire hazards.

Institution may designate a responsible fire safety officer or committee oversees to the institution's compliance with fire safety norms.
