The technical colleges in Odisha will now have 10 per cent seat reservation for candidates from economically weaker sections (EWS). This new scheme will come into effect from the current academic session.

Following the approval of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) has also decided to implement the same.

Chairman of OJEE cell Sudip Kumar Chand informed that there will be 10 per cent reservation for the EWS students in all technical institutions this year for the first time.

"To implement this reservation, there will be a need to increase seats in these educational institutions by 25 per cent. We hope, this decision of the government will definitely help many students from the economically weaker section," the OJEE chairman added.

Earlier, Odisha government had implemented 10 per cent EWS quota in three medical colleges in the state. Subsequently, 25 MBBS seats increased each in Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital in Baripada and Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput.

Similarly, a total of 50 MBBS seats were increased in Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Burla taking the total intake of the institutions to 200.
