A woman died in mysterious circumstances, barely a month after her marriage in Bhubaneswar, with her family alleging that she was murdered by her in-laws for dowry.

The deceased has been identified as Prabhapati Nayak from Andarai village under Tihidi block in Bhadrak district.

Following a complaint, Prakash Khuntia, the husband of the deceased, was arrested and forwarded to court.

As per reports, Prabhapati had tied the nuptial knot with Prakash of Sarakantara village in Bhubaneswar on April 29. However, the in-laws of Prabhapati informed her parents on May 29 that she committed suicide by hanging herself inside their house.

The parents of Prabhapati rushed to her in-law’s home immediately. However, to their utter dismay, they found that their daughter’s last rites had been hastily performed.

Subsequently, the parents of the deceased lodged a complaint at Khandagari police station alleging that their daughter was murdered by her in-laws for dowry.

As per the complaint by the family members of the deceased, Prabhapati was frequently tortured by his in-laws. However, they remained tight-lipped as the girl was new to the family.

Based on the complaint, Khandagiri police launched a probe and arrested Prakash. The accused is currently being questioned by the police.
