Three minor boys drowned while bathing in the Devi River in Konark of Puri district on Tuesday. 

The deceased have been identified as Rohan Behera, a Class VIII student; Om Behera, a Class X student and Kanha Behera, a Class IX student. All were residents of Balidia village of Nagar panchayat. 

As per reports, the trio went to the Devi River for bathing. When they didn’t return even after a long time, family members started searching for them. They found their clothes on a boat. Suspecting something bad, a search operation was launched in the river. Later, they were found floating in the river.

After being rescued, they were immediately rushed to the Astarang Community Health Centre (CHC) and from where they were shifted to Charichhak CHC. But it was too late by then. The doctors declared them brought-dead. 

As the news broke, a pall of gloom descended on the village, leaving the residents mourning for the departed souls. 

“The children were received dead. After receiving the bodies, I informed the police,” said Dr Mahesh Mohapatra, medical officer of Charichhak CHC. 

“Without informing their family members, three children went to the Devi River for bathing. As the current was towards the sea, they were swept away and drowned,” said Pravakar Behera, a Balidia village resident.
