Tirunelveli (TN): People`s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), spearheading the agitation against Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP), today threatened to stage a black flag demonsration against DMK chief M Karunanidhi during his visit here on March 15 for his statement on early commissioning of the controversial project.

Karunanidhi will be campaigning on Thursday for his party nominee in the March 18 by-poll to Sankarankoil, which falls in the district. Hitting back at the DMK chief for his appeal to Central and State governments to make efforts for immediate commissioning of the project, PMANE Convener P Udayakumar told reporters that Karunanidhi was trying to take political mileage out of the present acute power crisis in the state.

Charging Karunanidhi with "betraying" Tamils` interests on issues of Sri Lankan Tamils, Katchchatheevu and Mullaperiyar dam, he said "we plan to hold a black flag demonstration against Karunanidhi on March 15 at Idinthakarai". He said PMANE activists would intensify their stir by organising protest and fast against the commissioning of the Indo-Russian project.

Udayakumar said he had also sent a legal notice to former Union Minister E V K S Elangovan for alleging that an NGO being run by him had received foreign funds to the tune of Rs 1.50 crore. The notice sent through his lawyer said the allegation was "totally false" and demanded an apology within three days, failing which appropriate civil and criminal proceedings would be initiated.
