India’s 25-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder, Washington Sundar, has signed with Hampshire County Cricket Club in the midst of the Asia Cup 2025. Hampshire on Thursday confirmed the acquisition of Sundar for their upcoming County Championship matches.

Although Sundar is currently part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad as a standby player, he has not travelled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with the main team. Like other reserve players, he will join the squad if needed during the tournament.

Sundar’s new deal with Hampshire covers the final two rounds of the County Championship. Hampshire is scheduled to face Somerset at Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, from September 15 to 18, followed by a clash against Surrey at Utilita Bowl from September 24 to 27.

This will mark Washington Sundar’s return to County Cricket after his last stint in 2022, when he represented Lancashire in both red-ball and white-ball formats.

Giles White, Director of Cricket at Hampshire, expressed excitement about Sundar joining the club. “We’re thrilled to have Washington on board for the County Championship. He had an outstanding series against England this summer, and we expect him to play a key role in the two big upcoming matches against Somerset and Surrey,” said White in an official statement.

Earlier this year, Sundar played an important part in India’s high-profile five-match Test series against England, helping India level the series 2-2. The 25-year-old all-rounder, favored by the Gautam Gambhir-led team management, participated in four of the five Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. Although he was not selected for the first match at Headingley, Leeds, he was included in the lineup for the rest of the series.

In eight innings with the bat, Sundar amassed 284 runs at an impressive average of 47.33, highlighted by a crucial match-saving century at Old Trafford, Manchester. With the ball, he claimed 7 wickets at an average of 38.57, maintaining an economy rate of 3.64 and a strike rate of 63.57.
