Jajpur: An old man was allegedly beaten to death by his nephew in Kalinga Nagar area in Jajpur, police said on Saturday.

Though police recovered the body from an under construction railway line near Bajrapali village yesterday and sent it to government hospital at Danadgadi for post mortem, the killer is still at large, police said.

The deceased was identified as Gopal Jena (59) of Ranagundisahi village under Kalinga Nagar area. Gopal was allegedly killed by his nephew Pitambar Jena over a land dispute, police said.

According to the FIR filed with the Kalinga Nagar police on Friday, Gopal went to his farm land to oversee the cultivation on Thursday morning. Pitamber Jena, who happens to be the nephew of Gopal, picked up a fight with him in the farm land. The local people who were working nearby, rushed to the spot and pacified the duo.

"In the evening Gopal went to nearby market to purchase some essential commodities for his family. On his return to home from the market, Pitambar attacked Gopal with a lathi from behind, killing him on the spot. Then the accused dumped the body on the nearby railway tracks to give the murder an accident look," said Jyoti Prakash Panda, inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Kalinga Nagar police station, quoting the FIR.

A case under section 302 of IPC was registered in this connection and investigation was on.

"The accused has been absconding from the village soon after the incident and a massive manhunt is on to nab him," the IIC said.
