Srinagar: Kashmir valley received its first snowfall of the season in the upper reaches of Gulmarg tourist resort and in some remote parts of north Kashmir, signalling the arrival of winter.

Snowfall has been reported overnight in the upper mountainous reaches of Gulmarg tourist resort, JK MeT director Sonum Lotus said here today. Light to moderate snowfall was also received in mountains of Gurez in Bandipora district and Machil sector in Kupwara district, he said.

Intermittent rains across the Valley since yesterday have brought a sharp dip in the day temperature in the region. The summer capital of Srinagar was lashed with 13.0 mm rainfall, while the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir received 10.2 mm rains.

Gulmarg, where the night temperature plunged below zero degree, received 18.8 mm rainfall. The minimum temperature recorded in this famous skiing resort was minus one degree Celsius, officials said. Kashmir witnesses an extremely harsh four month winter season beginning November when the minimum temperature across the valley mostly remains below the freezing point.
