New Delhi: A Congress member in the Lok Sabha on Monday pressed for early implementation of the recommendations of Wage Boards for journalists and non-journalists of newspapers and news agencies.

Raising the matter in the Zero Hour, P T Thomas asked the government to favourably consider implementation of the award of the Wage Boards headed by Justice G R Majithia.

The recommendations of the Wage Boards were submitted to the government on December 31, 2010, he said, demanding that the government should take early action to implement the award.

He claimed that out of 1,453 newspaper establishments, only 467 had implemented the recommendations of the earlier wage boards.

The Majithia Wage Boards passed five resolutions for re-classification of newspapers, payment of arrears from January 8, 2008, increase in the rate of annual increment and hike in House Rent Allowance.

The issue was raised in the Rajya Sabha through a Special Mention by Congress member P J Kurien last week. He had demanded that the recommendations be implemented at the earliest so that employees in news organisations get relief.

Kurien had said it was the duty of the government to mitigate the hardships of media persons.
