The American Optometric Association defines digital eye strain as a group of eye and vision-related problems caused by prolonged use of computers, tablets, e-readers, and cell phones, resulting in increased stress to near vision in particular. It can cause a variety of eye problems, including irritation, itching, frequent headaches, redness in the eyes, and many others. However, some simple lifestyle changes can reduce the burden of digital eye strain and help to protect the eyes.

The 20-20-20 rule

This rule states that after every 20 minutes of screen time, you should try to look away for 20 seconds at something 20 feet away from you. It is recommended by the American Optometric Association. This is one of the most effective ways to rest your eyes while using screens.

Take Breaks

Viewing screens without taking breaks can harm your eye health and impair your vision. To reduce the risk of eye strain, take a 15 to 20-minute break every two hours. Close your eyes and blink them for a few minutes to relax and de-stress them. Remember to rinse your eyes with cool water to soothe them.

Nourishing Diet

The eyes are one of our body's most important sense organs, and the best eye health comes from a healthy diet. Included nutrients such as beta-carotene, lutein, and vitamins K, C, E, and A, among others, benefits eye health. To avoid eye problems, eat plenty of green vegetables, fresh fruits, fatty fish like salmon and tuna, and nuts.

Lighting

Lighting has a variety of effects on the eye. Working on mobile devices or laptops in poor lighting can cause eye strain and blurred vision. It can cause serious eye infections and complications.

Adjust the screen settings

Adjust the contrast, font, brightness, and font size to a level that is comfortable and does not strain your eyes. The night mode feature on smartphones, laptops and other electronic devices reduces the impact of blue light on the eyes.

A person should spend no more than seven hours per day looking at the screen. Working on gadgets can be scheduled, and breaks can be prioritised.
