Habisha Dalma

Kartik is considered as the holiest of months. Habisyalis who hold kartik vrat and Bada Osa make it a point to have meal once a day. So, they prefer eating Habisha Dalma which is prepared without turmeric, onion and garlic. Apart from raw banana, green moong dal and a few vegetables like elephant apple, taro and yam are major vegetables that add aroma to the dalma. Needless to say, Habisha Dalma plays a vital role in the lunch platters of Kartik month, especially during Mondays. 

Ingredient required

  1. Moong dal 1 cup
  2. Elephant apple (1 inch slice) 2-3 pieces
  3. Pumpkin (cube shape) 1/2 cup
  4. Raw banana (cube shape) 1/2 cup
  5. Colocasia (cube shape) 1/4 cup
  6. Ginger 1 inch
  7. Cumin seed 1/2 tsp
  8. Whole red chili 2 no.
  9. Bay leaf 1-2 no.
  10. Roasted cumin-red chili powder 1 tsp
  11. Coconut (grated) 2 tbsp
  12. Ghee 1 tbsp
  13. Salt as needed

How to make

  1. First wash and drain the moong dal and keep it aside.
  2. In a pressure cooker, heat ghee. Put in red chilies, bay leaves and saute for one minute.
  3. Add cumin seeds and allow it to crackle. Then, put the drained moong dal along with all the cut vegetables, crushed ginger, salt and 2-3 cup water. Mix everything using a spatula and cover the lid of the pressure cooker.
  4. Cook for 1-2 whistles or till all the vegetables are done well. Turn off heat. Allow the steam to escape automatically and till then keep aside the pressure cooker.
