Sambalpur: Two persons of a family were chased and brutally hacked to death following a quarrel over drinking of liquor at Bhandarimal village under Jujumura block in the district late Monday night.

The deceased have been identified as Shakti Bhusan Kumra and Arabinda Kumra. Another sibling of the deceased, Bibhuti Bhusan and their relative Nandalal Bhuye were also critically injured in the attack by a rival group.

According to police, the three brothers and their relative had picked up a quarrel with four others of their village after drinking liquor yesterday night. Later, the four accused chased and hacked two of them to death with sharp weapons. Two others who sustained critical injuries were shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla.

The accused are reportedly absconding after committing the crime.

Inspector-in-charge of Jujumura police station and Redhakhol SDPO visited the spot immediately after the incident. Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kanwar Vishal Singh also made an on-spot assessment at the scene today morning.

“Prima facie investigation hints that the murders were fallout of a dispute. Further details will be ascertained after a thorough investigation,” Singh said.

“Four teams have been formed. One suspect has been detained so far and efforts are on to nab other accused persons at the earliest. In order to maintain law and order in the area, adequate police force have been deployed." he added.
