Sundergarh: After few initial weeks of COVID scare, steel city Rourkela and other parts of the district which stayed above the clutch of the viral disease now seems to be on the verge of becoming a hotspot.

In the last two days, as many as 95 people in Rourkela alone have been detected COVID positive and as per the district administration, all of them belonging to Sector 16 area of the city have been infected after coming in contact with a single super spreader. Earlier on Tuesday, as many as 49 cases were detected from the same Sector 16 area.

According to the State Health department, Sundergarh has reported 78 new COVID positive cases on Wednesday while district headquarters Rourkela has reported 46 positive cases.

Sundergarh District collector Nikhil Pawan Kalyan has informed media that in order to prevent the disease from spilling out to other areas, aggressive contact tracing has been initiated.

"Our contact tracing mechanism is good enough and we are trying to trace every possible contacts of the COVID positive cases. We are leaving no stone unturned to stop further spread of the disease with local contacts," said  Kalyan.

Of the positive cases detected today, 17 of them have travel history, 58 are contacts of the previous case. Most of the positives have been reported from containment zones. The new areas which have registered COVID cases have been declared containment zones.

District administration has put Basanti colony and Gol Ghar area in containment zones after steady rise in COVID positive cases.

As of now, Sundergarh reported 471 confirmed positive cases, 285 active cases and 185 COVID positives has alredy been recovered. District's COVID casualty stands at 1.
