Keonjhar (Odisha): Four persons were arrested on Friday on charge of electrocuting a female elephant in Keonjhar district, police said.

The pachyderm died two days back at Brahmanijhar village under Champua forest range after it came in contact with a live electric wire hanging over the elephant corridor.

The villagers were allegedly pilferaging electricity for domestic use by hooking the main line passing through the area under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutkaran Yojana when it struck the elephant, Range Officer, Champua, R A Mishra said.

The four identified as Kanda Munda, Dasara Munda, Rama Munda and Sama Munda were arrested under various sections of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and forwarded to the court, he said.

Two others involved in the incident were absconding and effort was on to nab them, he said.
