Earlier, the Indian men's team dominated the group stage with 3-0 wins over Barbados, Singapore and Northern Ireland. On the other hand, the Indian women's team, led by their top table tennis player Manika Batra, suffered a major upset against Malaysia after going down 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
In probably the first of its kind move in the sports sector in India, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), on Thursday declared that it would offer equal prize money for men and women TT players in all the tournaments including national championships across age groups from the new season beginning June 2022.
Today, on the National Sports Day, India woke up to an amazing news. Paddler Bhavina Patel scripted history for India by securing a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.
Patel, who was diagnosed with polio when she was 12 months old, had defeated world no 3 Miao Zhang of China in the semifinal showdown on Saturday.
Bhavina has assured India's first medal in table tennis at the Paralympics. India's 12 medals at the Paralympics so far have come in three sports -- athletics (3 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze), powerlifting (1 bronze), and swimming (1 gold).
What action TTFI takes against its high-profile player remains to be seen but it is certain that attendance of all India players will be made mandatory for national camps.
With the defeat, India's challenge has ended in table tennis at the Games. Manika Batra, Sutirtha Mukherjee and G Sathiyan have all exited the singles competition.
