CJI Chandrachud is pronouncing the verdict on the batch of petitions challenging the constitutionality of the 2019 Presidential Order taking away the special status accorded to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and its bifurcation into two Union Territories.

Senior advocates, including Kapil Sibal, Gopal Subramanium, Rajeev Dhavan, Zaffar Shah and Dushyant Dave, had argued on behalf of the petitioners.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, is hearing pleas, including the one filed by Upadhyay, alleging that the pre-election promise of freebies by political parties is a corrupt practice and amounts to a "bribe" under the Representation of the People Act.

A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Prashant Kumar Mishra has issued stern warning to Ramdev owned Patanjali Ayurveda against deceptive advertisement of its product.

Earlier this year, the most powerful legal body in the country had released a "statement on ethics principles and practices", but the nine-page "code of conduct" released on Monday provides significantly more detail, the BBC reported.

A bench headed by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud said that it will be difficult to issue uniform guidelines for speedy disposal of cases pending against legislators. 

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued clarification on the directions issued by it against bursting of firecrackers. The Apex Court categorically stated that its previous directions against the use of barium and banned chemicals in firecrackers are applicable across the country, binding all states and not just the Delhi-National Capital Region.

This observation was made by the Top Court while responding to a plea over high pollution levels in Udaipur, falling air quality index and lack of regulations to demarcate noise pollution levels.

The rise in pollution choking Delhi, the Supreme Court has pulled up Haryana and Punjab Government over stubble or crop residue burning. The Apex Court stressed that the situation can’t be politicized and equalized the choking air quality with “murder of people’s health.”

The bench of Justice Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia passed directives to stop stubble burning, saying that residents of Delhi are suffering because they can't find a solution. This has been going on for the past five years.

This petitioner had filed the plea for the state of Rajasthan seeking orders from the top court to direct implementation of the previous orders.

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Friday requested the members of the bar to not seek adjournments unless really necessary and raised concern over 3,688 adjournments in one month.

The apex court has directed that Sisodia's trial be completed within six to eight months.

It passed detailed guidelines on a public interest litigation, filed by Dr. Balram Singh, the petitioner-in-person, which had sought directions for implementation of the Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993

A bench comprising Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Aravind Kumar said those who suffer permanent disabilities while cleaning sewers will be paid Rs 20 lakh as minimum compensation.
