A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath said after the constitution bench judgment, the court does not think to exercise its jurisdiction under Article 142 of the Constitution in individual cases to accept demonetised currency notes.

A five-judge bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul said the Centre's plea is not maintainable in law and it also lacked merits on the facts of this case.

The top court has directed both the state governments to submit their replies within 28 days. 

It also stressed that the ballot is more potent than the most powerful gun and democracy facilitates a peaceful revolution at the hands of the common man if elections are held in a free and fair manner.

Reacting to the court directions, Adani group Chairman Gautam Adani tweeted: "The Adani Group welcomes the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court. It will bring finality in a time bound manner. Truth will prevail."

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered a panel comprising the prime minister, leader of opposition (LoP), Chief Justice of India (CJI) for selecting election commissioners.
