With its reserves frozen, the Central Bank announced it would more than double its main interest rates to 20 per cent, the highest this century, and force major exporting companies, including large energy producers like Gazprom and Rosneft, to sell 80 per cent of their foreign currency revenues, effectively buying roubles to prop up the currency rate.

After Russia launched special military operations in Ukraine last week, the latter immediately closed its airspace as a security measure, as a result of which lakhs of people including Indians got stuck in war zones or were forced to flee the country. In view of the deteriorating situation, the Indian Government launched ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring back all Indian nationals stranded in the war-torn country. Also, the Union government decided to deploy four Cabinet Ministers as special envoys to facilitate repatriation of around 19,000 Indians stranded in Ukraine. As part of 'Operation Ganga' initiative, the GoI has so far brought back over 1000 Indian nationals from Ukraine safely.

According to EU procedure, the membership application has to be submitted to the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Council is currently headed by France.

The safe return from the conflict zone naturally brought rounds of happiness to their anxious families and huge relief for the parents who spent sleepless nights watching the horrors of the dangerous war unfolding before television screens 24x7.

In a statement issued, the international chess body expressing its grave concern about the military action started by Russia in Ukraine said, "FIDE stands united against wars as well as condemns any use of military means to resolve political conflicts.

As the most severe crisis in the history of Europe since World War II unfolds with the Russian military offensive on Ukraine, a sinister sense of paranoia pervades across the globe.

Scenes of tearful reunion were seen at the Delhi airport after two Air India flights from Romanian capital Bucharest and one from Hungarian capital Budapest arrived with 688 Indian nationals on Sunday.

Massive missile strikes and all-out advances decisively failed to demoralise the Ukrainian military in the first hours of the attack or strip it of effective air defence, which has also demonstrated surprisingly high effectiveness since the very start. Sinyuk was quoted as saying that Sergey Torbin, a former combat veteran, was one of the inmates released. Torbin previously fought in the conflict with the DPR and LPR. He was jailed for six years and six months in 2018 for his role in the murder of civil rights activist and anti-corruption campaigner Kateryna Handziuk, RT reported.

So far, around 1,000 students have been evacuated from Ukraine while more will be airlifted by Monday via neighbouring countries.

It said that Indian nationals are being evacuated from Ukraine through Romania and Hungary. "We are continuously exploring and working to open up more borders with neighbouring countries for our citizens," the advisory read.

While making Russia solely responsible "for unleashing a new war in Europe", they said, "there is no rational justification for this war".
